Our Beliefs and Doctrinal Convictions

Our Core Beliefs

In addition to affirming the Apostle’s and Nicene Creeds (below) and the Westminster and Belgic Confessions, Theology Kids (founded by Ryan and Selena Frederick) upholds the following summarized doctrinal statement in life as well as the resources we create:

God and Man

We believe in one God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God created man in His own image and for the purpose of glorifying Him. However, instead of glorifying God, man glorifies himself and worships the created things instead of the Creator. Because of his rebellion and sin, man is separated from God and deserving of God’s punishment.

Jesus Christ

For His glory and because of His love for His children, God initiated a plan of redemption, which He fully accomplished on their behalf. God the Father sent Jesus the Son, fully God and fully man, to die on the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice for the sin of His children. Jesus lived a sinless life on earth, suffered death on the cross, was buried, and then rose again from the dead, demonstrating His victory over sin and death. Jesus fully paid for the redemption of God’s children, and, by God’s grace, we respond with repentance and faith.

The Holy Spirit

God, the Holy Spirit, opens blind eyes and draws God’s children to salvation. He then dwells in the hearts of believers, enabling their sanctification, and sealing them for eternity. The Holy Spirit has also been given to the people of God to empower them for obedience, service, and witness.

The Church

God brings His children together to form a family of believers, called the church, whose joy and duty is to live in unity in the power of the Holy Spirit and under the authority of Scripture.

The Bible

We believe that the Bible is divine revelation, and we submit to its authority, acknowledging it to be inspired by God, without error and carrying the full weight of His authority.

Traditional, Biblical Marriage

We believe that marriage is a God-made institution meant for the flourishing of mankind and His ultimate glory. God defines marriage, man does not. We believe that the Bible clearly defines marriage as a lifelong, exclusive union between one man and one woman.

Human Sexuality

We believe the Bible teaches that sexuality is a good gift from God and that legitimate sexual relations are exercised solely within marriage. We believe all forms of sexual immorality, including adultery, fornication, homosexuality, pedophilia, transgender behavior, bi-sexuality, bestiality, lascivious conduct, the distribution and/or viewing of pornography, and any other sexual deviation, are incompatible with the teaching of the Bible. (Romans 1, 1 Corinthians 5-6).

Depictions of Christ

We are of the conviction that, given of the nature of Christ (being truly God and truly man) and the natural human response to images of him, the 2nd Commandment (Exodus 20:4–6) prohibits illustrations of Jesus Christ. For this reason, though our children's books will clearly speak of Christ and illustrate settings where he is present, we do not create resources that illustrate depictions of him. We realize that not every faithful Christian holds this conviction and, out of a spirit of humility, we may make valuable discipleship resources written by other authors available on our website which may or may not support this conviction.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit;
  born of the virgin Mary;
Suffered under Pontius Pilate;
  was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended to hell; the third day
He rose again from the dead;
He ascended to heaven and sits on the
  right hand of the Father Almighty,
From whence He shall come to judge
  the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic* church,
  the communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
  and the life everlasting. Amen.

 *catholic refers to the global, unified Church.

The Nicene Creed

(A. D. 325; revised at Constantinople in A. D. 381)

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty; Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father; by whom all things were made;

Who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.

And we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
